District Secretary's Update No. 5 -  10 November 2022

Hello and Welcome to all members

November is Rotary Foundation Month. The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into projects that change lives both close to home and around the world. As the charitable arm of Rotary International, it taps into a global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money, and expertise into our priorities, such as eradicating polio and promoting peace.

Foundation grants empower Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact.

Strong financial oversight, a stellar charity rating, and a unique funding model mean that we make the very most of your contribution. Give and become a part of Rotary’s life-changing work!

Polio Movie Event - Update

Following the previous Update announcing this year’s Polio Movie Event we’ve now sourced two video clips that can be played by your cinema before screening the movie, The Lost King:

Zero Dose (2 minutes 32 seconds)

World Polio Day (53 seconds)

In order for your cinema to use the videos, they need them in DCP format (Digital Cinema Package) so we’ve had them converted to DCP:

This is a large file (about 5GB) so the best option will normally be to provide the link to the cinema and ask them to take care of the download.

World Health Summit Polio pledges

Recently, at a pledging session at the World Health Summit, hosted by the German Government in Berlin, global leaders confirmed US$ 2.6 billion in funding toward the Global Polio Eradication Initiative’s (GPEI) 2022-2026 Strategy.

This included $AUD43.5 million pledged by Senator Pat Conroy on behalf of the Australian Government  and $USD150 million confirmed by TRF Chair, Ian Riseley on behalf of Rotary International. A full list of the donors can be found in the attached WHO press release.

Furthermore, Dr Chris Elias from the Gates Foundation confirmed that it would continue its 2:1 match of contributions from Rotary for another 3 years. It is up to us to maximize this by raising  $USD50 million each year.

Other pleasing features of the pledging event were the acknowledgement of Rotary’s vital role in polio eradication; the sense of good will and collaboration between governments and other agencies to eradicate the disease; and a feeling of optimism that the job could be completed by 2026.

Rotary Peace Scholarships

Each year, Rotary awards up to 130 fully funded fellowships for dedicated leaders from around the world to study at one of our peace centres.

Through academic training, practice, and global networking opportunities, the Rotary Peace Centres program develops the capacity of peace and development professionals to become effective catalysts for peace. The fellowships cover tuition and fees, room and board, round-trip transportation, and internship and field-study expenses.

This year there were 600 applications for the 130 places worldwide.  Our District has three successful applicants:
Jacinta Bailey, Jawoon Kim and Alfred Mupenzi – how good is that!

Congratulations to them and the Clubs that supported their applications.

Award for Excellence in Service to Humanity

Rotary's Award for Excellence in Service to Humanity recognizes non-Rotarians, including partners and spouses of Rotarians, who have demonstrated exemplary humanitarian service in accord with Rotary's ideals, recognised worldwide as ‘Service above Self’.

District Governors can only nominate one person for this award in their year – to an individual who has demonstrated this exemplary humanitarian service in the District. The nomination then goes to Rotary International for their careful approval.

The Rev Ken Day of St Stephen’s Uniting Church in Macquarie St. Sydney was chosen during 2021-22 from the Rotary District spanning Sydney, the Illawarra and the Macarthur region, because of his amazing ongoing commitment to the street dwellers of Sydney.

This was manifest in his church leadership and moral support that allowed the Early Bird Café to be initiated (from September 2019) and continued through the highs and lows of the COVID pandemic and now continues.
Rev Ken Day provided the leadership necessary for the Church Elders to initially decide in favour of the Early Bird project – a project supported by the Rotary Club of Sydney Cove, providing breakfast to Sydney’s homeless every week-day morning.

He then did everything possible to facilitate the early start, with breakfast service starting downstairs at St Stephen’s in September 2019, lasting till COVID restrictions applied in late March 2020. Rev Day was then willing to back the Early Bird team when the service was able to restart again as a take-away in June 2020.
Rev Day has also been a regular volunteer as part of that service as it has grown, with now an average of over 100 street dwellers being served each morning. Recently (on Monday 17th October 2022), the service served 149 breakfasts – a record so far.

For his amazing leadership, support and encouragement, Rev Ken Day truly deserves the recognition of Rotary International’s Award for Excellence in Service to Humanity.

International Request - Accommodation Assistance Required

We have had a request from a Danish Rotarian to assist their grand daughter who will be studying in Sydney for 3 months.  She will be attending Macquarie University and was hoping to secure accommodation close to that location.  I know this is outside our District but many of us live outside the District.

See request below:
I am a Danish Rotarian, and I was District Governor in District 1440 2003/04. One of my fellow Rotarian Governors, Leif, from D 1460 has asked me to contact the Sydney Rotary District asking you to help his granddaughter, Camilla, trying to finding accommodation in Sydney for three months.

"To whom this may concern Our granddaughter is going to spend 3 months at the Macquarie University as part of her Ph.d in microbiology and protein research. We therefore wish to hear if you could assist with housing or point out some affordable accommodation for a Danish student who is very dedicated, modest and easy to be around. The stay in Sydney is planned to be from December 9th to March 6th. We are looking for some accommodation in a short distance (or limited travel period) from the Macquarie University, Balaclava Rd., Macquarie Park NSW 2109 in the area "North Ryde” in Sydney. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Best regards Leif Brejndal PDG D 1460"

If you are able to assist, please contact Svend E. Jensen [svej02@gmail.com]

Rotary Club of Newcastle celebrate 100 year

Some of you might recall that President Pat Glass and Secretary Beverley Oakley from the Rotary Club of Newcastle attended our District Membership Seminar in Sydney City, last year. They spoke to us about the revitalisation of their Club which is about to reach it’s 100 year anniversary.

They were the first Regional Club chartered in Australia and now as District 9670 has merged with District 9650, forming new District 9660 they are reunited with some of the original clubs chartered by Rotary Club of Newcastle.

They have invited us to attend and join in their celebrations – see save the date below:
