DISTRICT NEWS - OCTOBER 2025

October is Economic and Community Development Month

Rotary Clubs all over the world help communities and people in other countries with projects that aim to provide sustainable ongoing development and help, not just immediate charity.

The Rotary Foundation also enables Rotarians to invest in people by creating sustainable, measurable and long term economic improvements in their communities and livelihoods by :
  • Building the capacity of entrepreneurs, community leaders, local organisations, and community networks to support economic development in impoverished communities;
  • Developing opportunities for productive work;
  • Reducing poverty in under-served communities; and
  • Supporting studies for career-minded professionals related to economic and community development.

Message from your District Governor:

Greetings from Renga!

It is with immense pride and optimism that I welcome you to the fourth edition of our District Bulletin for the Rotary year 2025–26.

October is Rotary International’s Community Economic Development Month, a time to focus on projects that foster sustainable growth and help communities rise out of poverty. This theme reminds us that Rotary is not just about service it is about empowering people to create lasting change. Across our District, clubs are leading initiatives that provide vocational training, support local entrepreneurs, strengthen small businesses, and improve access to essential financial services.

Our shared goal is to help communities thrive by building economic capacity and creating opportunities for meaningful work. When people gain the means to support themselves and their families, they also gain dignity and independence. That is the true essence of Service Above Self—offering opportunity, not just aid, and empowering others to build a better future.

October is also Mental Health Month in Australia, an important time to reflect on emotional wellbeing and to promote open conversations about mental health. Rotary has always been a strong advocate for community wellness, and many of our clubs continue to support initiatives that reduce stigma, encourage connection, and provide access to mental health resources. Let us remember that true community development includes nurturing minds and hearts as much as livelihoods.

The Rotary year 2025–26 continues with strong momentum, marked by several inspiring events. The Illawarra Charity Race Day brought together Rotary Clubs across the region, raising substantial funds for community causes. The RAWCS Compassionate Grants Celebration honoured Dick and Pip Smith’s remarkable $1 million donation supporting humanitarian work. The Rotary UN International Day of Peace 2025 united clubs from Australia, India, Nepal, and the Philippines in celebrating peace through service. The RIWA 2025 Awards Celebration at Bankstown Sports Club recognised outstanding women achievers from diverse fields, reflecting Rotary’s inclusive spirit.

I am also delighted to share that we reached our first milestone in the Raise for Rotary 2025 campaign—completing 500 km in 94 days and raising over $8,000 for The Rotary Foundation. This achievement demonstrates what we can accomplish together with shared purpose and perseverance.

As we move forward, let us continue to serve with passion and compassion—empowering communities, supporting wellbeing, transforming lives, and keeping the Rotary spirit alive in all that we do.

In Rotary Service,
Renga Rajan
District Governor 2025–2026

Can you Help?

Our District is collaborating with The University of Sydney on an October Intensive ICPU (Industry and Community Project Unit) subject, exploring membership and retention challenges amongst younger cohorts. One of the groups has requested a brief questionnaire be completed by as many Rotarians in our District as possible - and as soon as possible - as these Intensive programs are very compressed in their timing. I would appreciate it if you could find the few minutes it takes to complete this survey. It may help us unlock some great ideas for membership.

Link to the Survey here.
