World Polio Day and Train Ride for Polio

There have only been two cases of the Wild Polio Virus Type 1 in the world with Afghanistan and Pakistan having one each. There were 40 cases of the Vaccine Derived Polio Virus Type 2 through 2 countries, Afghanistan, Pakistan and throughout Africa. This is a magnificent achievement and all due to vaccination rates.
Delivering on our promise to children, the strategy 2022 – 2026 is…
Goal one:  Permanently interrupt transmission of all polioviruses in Afghanistan and Pakistan by 2023.
Goal two:  Stop transmission of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 and prevent outbreaks in polio-free regions by 2026.
For World Polio Day on the 24 October consider organising novel events, stretch your imaginations even when we may still be constrained by COVID restrictions. For ideas visit
Unfortunately, due to current COVID restrictions, we will be unable to board our successful ‘Ride the Train for Polio’ event which was scheduled for the 22 October.
Instead, the Train Ride for Polio has been re-scheduled to coincide with Rotary’s birthday, on 23 February 2022. A team of us will be riding the trains between Newcastle and Bomaderry and west to the Blue Mountains. Meet us at the station and bring along your donation.  More details will be available closer to the time.

RESCA Vocational Training Team - Announcement And Update

The Rotary Emergency Services Community Awards (RESCA) is helping one of the world’s most ‘at risk of disaster’-prone countries – Tonga.
RESCA is funding a Rotary Vocational Training Team (VTT), focussed on an Emergency Management exchange with Tonga. Generally, the exchange will seek to build planning and response capacity, develop governance arrangements; build and strengthen communications between Tonga Fire & Emergency Services and its community. With COVID arrangements in place the VTT is expected to occur in early 2023.
The Australian team will comprise a Rotary Team Leader, and members of the NSW emergency services (Fire & Rescue, State Emergency Services, Volunteer Rescue Association and Rural Fire Service), a member of South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service and one Emergency Services Officer from the ACT.
The selection committee is proud to announce Shane Burette, RC Wetherill Park has been selected as the Team Leader and James Allen, RC Sydney, Alternate Team Leader.
Recruitment of the Team will commence soon.

Changes to Rotary volunteering events:

Blackmores Running Festival
Due to the evolving COVID situation in NSW, staging this as a live event will not be possible in 2021. It is hoped that the 20th Runiversary will be able to be held in 2022, but as yet no date has been proposed. Existing volunteer applications are being held onto and updates will be provided when available.
However, this year, the 2nd Blackmores Virtual Running Festival will be held from Sunday 19 September to Sunday 17 October. Details are on the event website
This year’s City2Surf is to be a virtual event held from October 17 – 24. A new website is being developed and should soon be available with the event details.

Sad loss of Dave Smark from the Rotary Club of Kiama

The members of the Rotary Club of Kiama and our District are deeply saddened by the sudden and unexpected passing of immediate past president, David Smark. His contribution to our club and our community are greatly valued and he will be deeply missed. Last year, Dave took up the role of President for the third time in order to steer the club through the particularly challenging 2020-21 club year.
Dave was an exceptional leader who always considered the bigger picture and took all perspectives into account. He was a mentor and good friend to his fellow Rotarians. Dave was the leading light on key projects such as the Melanoma Skin Cancer Screening and a number of new fundraising approaches as well as an active member of all club activities.
Dave exemplified the Rotary motto of Service Above Self and is a very sad loss to our club. We would like to express our condolences to Dave's wife Maria.

Vale Paul Bateman OAM from the Rotary Club of Kogarah

It is with a very sad heart that we write a small tribute to our dear friend Paul Bateman in light of his most unexpected passing.
His passion for his Church, Youth and young leaders, his music and Rotary are a memorable legacy that he leaves with us. His ability to interact with many young people, starting with his profession as a teacher, and continued as Youth/New Generations Director in Rotary, has influenced many a young person across all our Rotary Youth programs. His memory will certainly be honoured across all of those fields.
It is hard to believe that he will not turn up at Rotary, as President of course, but to continue his passion with the youth involved in Rotary New Generations programs.
Paul was a presence in life and will continue be a presence even now. We offer to his family and friends, our deepest sympathy in these very sad times. Paul will be remembered by many as a friend and as a fine example as Service Above Self.
