DISTRICT NEWS - MAY 2025

May is the month when Rotary focuses on Youth.

The link between Rotary and youth for all our Clubs is amazing, engaging with Youth Programmes in some way or another, whether it be Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA), Rotary Youth Programme of Enrichment (RYPEN), Rotary Youth Driving Award (RYDA), Rotaract, Interact, Rotary International Youth Exchanges, Peer Support Programmes in schools, Life Education vans, Literacy Programmes in schools, and many others.

The energy that Youth have is something for all of us to consider tapping into. It‘s time to think outside the square and put some energy into preserving the future of Rotary.

Service Above Self Award

Congratulations to Dot Hennessy, Rotary Club of Sydney Cove who has been recognised by Rotary International as a 2025 recipient of the Service Above Self Award.

Rotary created the Service Above Self Award to recognise members who fully embody our primary motto.  While many Rotary members distinguish themselves through service, this award recognises those who make it a way of life.

A Rotarian for over 30 years, Dot is currently the President of the Sydney Cove Satellite Club.  A busy Rotarian, in this time she established the Rotary Emergency Services Community Awards which has grown to be a state-wide initiative, initiated the Rotary Inspirational Women Awards for the state and developed a partnership between Rotary & PCYC just to name a few.

Dot has been a tireless worker on both Club and District projects and Bob & herself have attended over 10 Rotary Conventions where Dot volunteered as a Sergeant.

120 Years of Service

Our District has many members who have achieved many years of service, but how many clubs have 3 members achieving 40 years service in the same year.

Any club would be proud to have ONE member who celebrated 40 years in Rotary.  But Corrimal Rotary are even prouder to celebrate THREE members with 40 years service.  And more significantly - three members with 40 years service in the same year - 1985 must have been a good year!

They recently held a special dinner to celebrate the 40 years in Rotary of members Tony Kemper, Tim Mann and John Akele who all joined the club in 1985.

DG Tonia Barnes attended the night and presented Tony, Tim and John with their 40 years of Service Recognition letters which were signed by RI President, Stephanie Urchick.

Club memorabilia was available for dinner attendees to browse with some great photographic memories as well as the original paper members service record book and the program from Corrimal Rotary's Charter Dinner in June 1959.

Rick is a member of the Rotary Club of Strathfield and currently holds the positions of Foundation Grants Officer and District Chair for Australian Rotary Health.  He has also held other positions at District level including Assistant Governor in 2018-2022.

RESCA Nominations have been extended

Did you know that the Rotary Districts of NSW Emergency Services Community Awards (RESCA) is the only way for the community to recognise our emergency service personnel who have gone above and beyond their call of duty and reflected the Rotary motto of “Service above Self”.

Given the current mayhem caused by Cyclone Alfred, there will be individuals that stand out in your community who are worthy of this award.

Please get the message out to your local community and let's give our emergency services volunteers the recognition they deserve.

Nominations close on 14th May - so nominate here if you know someone.

A Night of Youth Empowerment: Interact Celebration a Great Success at Rotary Club of Strathfield

An Interact themed meeting recently held at the Rotary Club of Strathfield was a resounding success. The evening brought together the leadership teams from Meriden and Homebush Boys High School Interact Clubs for a collaborative and inspiring gathering.

President Alexey officially opened the meeting, warmly welcoming everyone including eight students—four from each school—as well as their Interact coordinators: Georgia Anton from Homebush Boys High and Emily Ormes from Meriden.

We were especially honoured to host Kerrie Guillaume, President of the Rotary Club of Fairy Meadow, who also serves as the District Interact Chair and District Rotaract Chair. Kerrie made the journey from Fairy Meadow to be with us and delivered an insightful and engaging presentation on the broader impact of Interact and Rotary. Her words were both informative and motivating, sparking enthusiasm in the students as they continue to grow their clubs and plan future initiatives.

The leadership teams from both schools had the opportunity to network, share ideas, and update the Rotary Club on their recent activities. Meriden Interact Club shared details about their annual school dance, this year in support of the children’s charity Little Wings. Homebush Boys High Interact Club presented their ongoing projects and community service efforts. They highlighted their upcoming World's Greatest Shave initiative at the school, in support of the Leukaemia Foundation, and their support for Australian Rotary Health's metal health programs.

Another highlight of the evening was the attendance of Mechel Pikoulas OAM, Principal of Strathfield Girls High School, who expressed a keen interest in establishing an Interact Club at her school. The potential launch of a third Interact Club in Strathfield would be a remarkable achievement for our district and a testament to our growing commitment to youth engagement.

Kerrie Guillaume shared, ‘I would like to congratulate Rotary Club of Strathfield for organising a Celebration of Interact and I was honoured to be invited. The enthusiasm of the Interactors and mentors was exceptional. Homebush Boys High Interact (Chartered 24th June, 2013) and Meriden Interact Club (Chartered 23rd September 1987) gave excellent informative reports on their very active club projects. The prospect of a third Interact Club at Strathfield Girls High School is a record for this District! Well done RC Strathfield’.

Our club also recently celebrated the success of our Annual Citizenship Awards, which saw participation from 17 local schools, with outstanding students receiving recognition for their contributions to their communities. We also look forward to our upcoming Youth Awards Night on May 21st, another key annual initiative in our dedication to fostering leadership in young people.

As always, Strathfield Rotary is strongly dedicated to supporting youth initiatives. Our long-standing involvement with programs like RYPEN, RYLA, and MUNA reflects this commitment, and we’re excited to see the growing momentum around Interact in our community.

The night was truly filled with energy, inspiration, and connection, a unique opportunity to uplift the next generation of community leaders.
