DISTRICT NEWS - FEBRUARY 2026

Dear Rotary Presidents, Club Leaders, and Fellow Rotarians,
Greetings from Renga!

It gives me immense pride, gratitude, and optimism to welcome you to the eighth edition of our District Bulletin for the Rotary Year 2025–26.

February – A Month of Peace and Understanding
February holds a very special place in the Rotary calendar. It marks the anniversary of the first Rotary meeting, held on 23 February 1905 in Chicago a day we now celebrate as World Understanding and Peace Day. In 2026, we commemorate 121 years of Rotary, a powerful reminder of our enduring commitment to peace, goodwill, and Service Above Self. This is also a wonderful opportunity for our clubs and districts to showcase Rotary’s public image and the positive impact we create in our communities.

A Proud Rotary Foundation Moment
One of the major highlights this month was RYLA 2026. Although we had a smaller intake this year, the impact was truly remarkable. Twenty-five young leaders took part in an intensive five-day camp and emerged more confident, motivated, and ready to excel in their studies and shape their futures. The “RYLA Moment” created this year gives us a strong foundation as we begin planning for RYLA 2027.

Highlights from Across Our District
Our clubs continue to demonstrate outstanding service and fellowship through a wide range of meaningful initiatives, including:
  • Australia Day celebrations
  • Many of our Rotarians being recognised with Australian and local council honours, including OAMs and Local Citizen of the Year awards
My sincere thanks to every club leader, volunteer, and community partner whose tireless efforts bring Rotary’s vision to life each day. These achievements truly reflect the collective spirit, fellowship, and service strength of our district.

Looking Ahead – Aspire to Inspire
We are now gearing up for our Rotary District Conference, Aspire to Inspire, to be held on Saturday, 14 March 2026. I warmly encourage every Rotarian to register and support this important event—a celebration of our service, leadership, and Rotary friendships.

Together, let us continue to serve, lead, and inspire.

Regards,
Renga Rajan
District Governor 2025–26

Australia Day Awards

Three of our fellow Rotarians were deservedly recognised in this year’s Australia Day Honours, each awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for their outstanding service to the community. Their dedication, generosity, and unwavering commitment to making a difference embody the very heart of Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self. We are incredibly proud to see their years of quiet hard work and leadership acknowledged on a national stage — a true testament to the impact one committed individual can have, and an inspiration to us all.

Cathie Mason - Caringbah Rotary
for service to the community through a range of roles

Robert Kirby - Iron Cove Rotary
for service to the community of Sydney

Max Connery - Sydney Cove Rotary
for service to social welfare and choral music

The following people were also recognised in local Council Australia Day Awards:

Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympics

Fun Fact:  Did you know, Australia is one of only TWO nations (alongside Greece) to have competed at every Olympic Games!

Olympians and Rotarians might wear different uniforms, but they’re powered by the same spirit — passion, persistence and a whole lot of heart. Olympians train for years chasing gold, while Rotarians put in the hours chasing something just as valuable: stronger communities and a better world. One brings home medals, the other brings lasting change — and both prove what’s possible when dedication meets purpose.

ROMAC UPDATE

Happy New Year from the ROMAC Team.

We closed out a busy year in December 2025 with the arrival of five-month-old Hilario Tarcisio Correia Da Silva and his mother Vanessa who travelled from Timor-Leste to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for specialist eye surgery. Following retinal detachment repair they were able to return home in time for Christmas. This was another wonderful outcome made possible through the dedication of ROMAC and the Westmead team.

Looking ahead to a busy 2026, we have already assisted fifteen-year-old Antonio Rinaldi Dos Santos Flores Pinto who arrived from Timor-Leste on 6th January for ophthalmic surgery. Antonio successfully underwent lens replacement surgery to his right eye on 12th January. During their stay in Sydney Antonio and his mother Ana were cared for by several ROMAC hosts including myself before returning home two weeks later.
On 8th February the ROMAC team will welcome twenty-two-month-old Janewly Banga and her mother Lien from Santo Island Vanuatu.  Janewly requires heart surgery to repair a ventricular septal defect. She will attend The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for cardiothoracic specialist appointments and tests in preparation for her proposed surgery on Friday 20th February.

If we are to continue helping children like Hilario, Antonio and Janewly, we need your support.

ROMAC would love clubs to host a Lei Day event in May 2026. If you have not already done so, please add Lei Day to your club’s events calendar. A lei symbolises our shared hope of helping children in need of medical care through Rotary Zone 8’s own ROMAC project.

If you would like to learn more about ROMAC please come and say hello to me and Anita Robinson, ROMAC Eastern Chair, at the ROMAC stand during the District Conference on Saturday 14th March.

OR   contact us Anita Robinson; anitagrobinson@outlook.com or Jennifer Pedley at connaljenny@yahoo.com.au to schedule a visit to your Club.

Jennifer Pedley,
District 9675, ROMAC Chair
