Empowering Women & Girls AwardsIn 2021, District Governor Jeremy Wright in D9675, made the appointment of an Ambassador for Empowering Women and Girls. This was in direct response to the call to action from our Rotary International President Shekar Mehta, whose passion is to empower women and girls. This is specifically in countries where the rights of women and girls are not clearly acknowledged and where war and violence, frighten families and women and children, every day. This also includes trauma close to our communities, where women and children flee domestic violence, where refugees and asylum seekers need assistance with resettlement, where women coming out of prison or surviving the suicide of their partner also need support to take that next step, to be empowered to re-enter the work force or enter for the first time. Empowering girls means, not only supporting them, to ensure that their basic needs are met, but also working to transform the structures and institutions, that reinforce and perpetuate gender discrimination and inequality. This award will recognise clubs which aim to support strategies that nurture girl’s and women’s developing self-confidence and empower them to make their voices heard and realise their full potential. It will recognise strategies that support women and girls, irrespective of beliefs, culture, or historical prejudice. Participating in the Empowering Women and Girls Award enables us to support two of Rotary’s Area of Focus: Maternal and Child Health and Basic Education and Literacy.

Vale Richard Arthur BoothIt is with great sadness and heavy heart that we wish to inform you of the passing of Richard Booth.
Richard was a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Wollondilly North and a passionate and active Rotarian at both Club and District levels over his 14 years as a Rotarian. During his time in Rotary he had many roles, he was twice President of Wollondilly North, he was an Assistant Governor, was heavily involved in both the RYPEN and RYLA Programs, was a current member of COTA and was an integral link with Wollondilly’s Sister Club of Kumamoto Joto in Japan. Our sympathy and condolences go to his wife Rosemary and family. It is indeed a tragic loss and he will be missed by all that knew him. RIP Richard |

UN Peace Day - Reflections on the War of TerrorYou are invited to join the Rotary Club of Sydney Peacebuilding Group at a special meeting on 21 September at 1230 via Zoom in recognition of the United Nations International Day of Peace. The guest speaker is Major General (Ret) Mike Smith AO who will give an address on his Reflections on the War on Terror – Lessons for Peacebuilding. Events in Afghanistan have rocked the world (again). Questions are being asked about Australia’s role in that war and how it will deal with the inevitable calls for help from those fleeing the escalating violence. A more urgent topic for discussion and action by Rotarians could hardly be found. Mike’s talk will focus on Australia’s involvement in the war in Afghanistan. |

SCAM ALERT!Our District has recently received emails from a person purporting to be the District Governor. These emails came from an email address other than that normally used by the District Governor requesting that a District Officer make a payment on the District Governor’s behalf into a nominated bank account. Fortunately, this was recognised as a scam. We have been advised that several other Clubs have received similar emails, but fortunately, again recognised it as a scam. We recommend that Club Officers check the source email address of any email from another Rotarian requesting that a payment be made and if the address is not known to the Club, the email be treated as a scam. We suggest that a screen shot be taken for reporting purposes and the email deleted. Do not reply to the email. You should also check your address book to verify that the address of the apparent source has not been altered. Please notify the District Treasurer if this occurs to your club executive. GET your contribution matched 100%GET your contribution matched 100% in recognition of 100 years of Rotary in Australia. Having been appointed as Director for Rotary Foundation Australia, I am very keen to see that we all can support the Rotary Foundation and more specifically the new Australian entity. With this in mind I have been looking at ways with my Fellow Directors as to how we could encourage and excite our Membership. I am sure most would know that the US dollar has weakened against the Australian dollar over the last couple of months to the point that for every for every 1 US$ costs $1.26. This is the best rate we have had in over three years. A BIGGER BANG for our AUSSIE DOLLAR. Now would be a great time for all Centurions (AUD$100 pa), Paul Harris Society Members (US$1000 pa) and anyone aiming to move to Major Donor status (US$10,000 total gifts) to contribute to the Rotary Foundation. At the moment the ANNUAL FUND for Zone 8 is Negative US$111,867 year to date ending February. As you all know it is the annual fund that contributes to the District Designated Funds that pay for our District 9675 grants and also underpin our Global Grants and the ability to support AUSTRALIAN GLOGAL GRANT Projects. Likewise, this is a great time for clubs to put their contribution in, so that we can gain the advantage of the rate. For this month Robyn and I will match dollar for dollar any contributions to the fund from individuals or clubs – provided you advise me before the end of the month! Doubling the BANG FOR YOUR BUCK and make ROTARY FOUNDATION AUSTRALIA, your Charity of choice. Garry Browne |

District Awards 2019-2020Immediate Past District Governor Dianne North would like to congratulate all the clubs in our District for the effort they have put into the 2019-20 Rotary year. It wasn’t an easy year for anyone. We started the year in drought, then the bushfires hit and destroyed many areas in our District. Just as we thought things were coming good COVID-19 hit us. This has severely impacted on many club activities – community service, fundraising and social. All clubs should be congratulated on the way they adapted to the many challenges that occurred during the year. It was a difficult decision for the Committee as to which clubs should receive the District Awards which are usually presented at the District Changeover. There are so many clubs in our District doing amazing work in their local communities and internationally. It was appreciated that Assistant Governors helped by making recommendations. IPDG Dianne has now enjoyed visiting clubs to personally present these awards. Now that all clubs have received their awards it is time to congratulate them all and announce who the recipients are. Best Club – The Rotary Club of Strathfield leads the District in many areas. The club has two International projects in Sri Lanka, for which their International Service Director, Thaya Ponniah, received an Avenues of Service Award from Rotary International. The members organised a very special, very moving online ANZAC Day service. The members are very active with their Interact Club, Homebush Boys High School, and the Strathfield Rotaract Club. The club received a Significant Service Award from Rotary International for all the community service work carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic. For 2019-20 the Club received a Rotary Citation with a Platinum Distinction and was among the top three clubs in the District for per capita giving to The Rotary Foundation. Best PR and Marketing – The Rotary Club of Granville – Many of their activities receive great recognition and coverage in the local media and are also mentioned in State Parliament regularly. With such events as their International Women’s Day Awards, an Information night, where they gained several new members, and Graffiti Removal Day, they always manage to get local politicians and dignitaries to attend and participate. Best International Project – The Rotary Club of Illawarra Sunrise has sent a medical and dental mission to The Philippines in January every year for many years with teams of doctors, nurses, dentists and many people capable of providing manual labour skills. Work undertaken includes immunisations, dental treatment, building homes, providing computers to local schools, toys, shoes and clothing to the locals, and many other things. This is a partnership with the Rotary Clubs of Glenhaven in District 9685, the Rotary Club of Seaton in District 1175 in England and the Rotary Club of Metro Bacolod in District 3850 in The Philippines. Best Local Community Project – The Rotary Club of Kings Cross held a Paws4aCause Dog Show at Rushcutters Bay Park in October 2019. There were many stalls available on the day with such things as dog portraits, children’s face painting and veterinarian advice. There were lots of dog competitions including fancy dress, best hairdo and best dressed pooch. This was a highly successful event attracting crowds of people from everywhere wanting to show off their dogs. Best Vocational Community Project – The Rotary Club of Padstow has run the Youth Vocational Awards for many years now. The hospitality students enjoy highlighting their skills by serving some delicious food to start the awards evening. The awards recognise all those students who are studying trades at high school. These students don’t usually receive such recognition. Best Youth Initiative/Project – The Rotary Club of Macarthur Sunrise runs Discobility four times a year. It is an evening of music, dancing and karaoke for young people with a disability to give them a chance to enjoy some fun with their friends and carers. Everyone gets pizza, chicken, drinks, pies and ice cream. The DJ does a great job and has a good rapport with everybody. Everyone has a lot of fun with lots of loud music, dancing and lots of laughs. Best Club Bulletin – The Rotary Club of Concord regularly produces a high quality, very informative bulletin with lots of Rotary information, local history and newsworthy stories. There is one thing that really brightens my week, and that is reading the weekly bulletin from the Rotary Club of Concord. |

RIWAOffical Announcement of Finalists for 20202020 ROTARY INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN’S AWARDS FINALISTS ANNOUNCED The NSW Minister for Mental Health, Regional Youth and Women, The Honourable Bronnie Taylor MLC, today announced the 24 NSW 2020 finalists for the Inspirational Women’s Awards proudly presented by the Rotary Clubs of NSW. Mrs Taylor said the Awards are a fantastic opportunity to shine a light upon the enormous contribution of women in both urban and rural communities across New South Wales. “These awards celebrate the outstanding commitment, energy and sacrifice of these incredible people who give so much of themselves and ask for nothing in return,” Mrs. Taylor said. “I congratulate all of the nominees for going above and beyond to make a difference to the lives of their peers and as a former cancer nurse, I’m particularly pleased to see the new category for healthcare workers.” This Year’s awards were expanded to recognize Women serving in the various Healthcare sectors of our communities. Given the drought, fires, floods and now COVID, these have presented greater challenges and opportunities for women. “This year’s finalists come from a variety of backgrounds and I thank them all for their exemplary community service.” Mrs. Taylor thanked all who submitted nominations this year, which are the largest ever. The judges comprising panels of Rotarians from across the State of NSW have been very proud to be involved and expressed the high quality of nominations have made their task very challenging and a wonderful honour. RIWA Chair, Rae-Anne Medforth is joined by our Awards Ambassador, Louisa Hope and the RIWA committee in extending their congratulations to each of our finalists. Finalists come from country locations, including Old Bar, Erowal Bay, Bulwarra, Cessnock, East Orange and Walgett. Urban include those from the Sydney area, Norfolk Island, Newcastle and Wollongong. The RIWA committee is currently organizing a Virtual Awards Ceremony to be held on 15 November 2020, to be compliant with COVID requirements. Full details will be announced and circulated as soon as they are confirmed. Media Contact – Richard Shute | Minister Taylor | 0409 394 232 2020 FINALISTS |

Conference 2019 Review |

New DistrictingDistricts, Clubs and Rotarians are putting in a terrific effort to halt the decline in membership. While this has slowed the rate of loss somewhat, contemporary methods of rendering service have changed from the traditional service club and a new approach is needed. One option (and one that is mandated by RI if District membership falls below 1100) is to grasp the initiative and form a larger District. As PRID Noel Trevaskis said "Larger districts are just the platform for change as we move forward together to face the challenge of change". |

2023 Rotary International ConferenceAnd the winner is Melbourne! It is with great excitement that we announce Melbourne as the host city for the 2023 Rotary International Convention, the largest conference secured this century for Victoria. Melbourne is a Big Events City! Set to deliver over $88 million to the Victorian economy, the Convention is the most valuable conference ever won for the state, with the four-day event anticipated to attract more than 20,000 Rotarians from around the world. The global spotlight will be on Melbourne and how we present ourselves to the world. |
